POLLENETIX®: Selecting Males and Females for Breeding
Questing after the Holy Grail isn’t characterized by any set of written rules. Breeders are the outlaws in the mainstream world of cannabis! We are a group of visionaries that takes what we see in our minds and make in into a reality! Through perseverance and determination we vision what the outcome of two strains will be and we set on the quest to find the Holy Grail of strains! The one strain that checks all the boxes!
The strong survive and thrive. Alpha genetics rage on. Dominance, vigor, bud structure, genetic disposition geared toward a high EC & a high light intensity environment is crucial in todays ever changing market and conditions for indoor growers from the west to the east coast.
Making feminized seeds is difficult. We take two known strains and attack it with full strength. We throw every trick in the book at fems, because we have run them before and and have an intricate and detailed understanding of how they react under pressure.
The true difference between good growers and great cannabis growers is just that. Adapting on the fly, in crunch time. When the clock is ticking and the whole cycle is about to go into the hash bins if we mess up at week 7-10.
Genetic disposition is a huge thing when selecting male and female plants for cannabis breeding. We look at everything. Strains contain different parents in their lineage. Phenotypes are variations of the same hybrid. Typically, Pro growers look at things like:
How fast did the germination process take?
How many seeds germinated?
How fast did the plant decide sex?
Did the plant wait until it was flipped to show sex?
How long does it take to root in a cloner, and plugs?
What is the veg time for indoor & outdoor?
How much vigor does this phenotype or strain have?
What structure does the plant have in it’s vegetative stat?
How does the plant flip, is it showing signs of stress?
How does the plant react to high EC/PPM feedings?
How does the plant react under high intensity indoor lighting? Both HPS and LED.
How long does the plant to develop bud sites?
What type of node stacking does the plant display?
What is the lateral branch reach?
What type of crown and kola does he/she form?
What is the bud structure?
Is this a monster, or a multi-topped short bush?
How long does the flower cycle take dictated by age of trichomes?
How well does the cannabis cure?
How long does the cure take running a typical 60/60?
How is the bag appeal?
How are the terps?
How well does the cannabis trim?
Did the strain display any unusual traits? Pest resistance, mold resistance? Drought resistance? Fast recovery?
The list goes on forever as all these can be answer subjectively. A great grower will goes through list like this as the cycle and life of the plant progresses. Making these habits second nature helps you accelerate your knowledge as you are developing the muscle memory to be on the watch for holy grail traits from the start!
